Trick-or-treat etiquette (10)

  • Wear something reflective — drivers dread twilight.
  • Only visit houses with lights on. Dark houses are resting, not rude.
  • Always say "Thank you" — manners cost nothing and earn extra candy.
  • Walk on sidewalks, cross at corners, never dash between cars.
  • Stay in a group; kids under 12 should have an adult.
  • Skip a house if it feels unsafe — no candy is worth a bad feeling.
  • Check treats at home: sealed wrappers only, share allergies before eating.
  • Respect the teal pumpkin project — teal means allergy-friendly.
  • Don't litter — keep your neighborhood tidy for next year.
  • Finish before the lights go off; most houses wrap by 8:30–9:00 pm.

Why plan a route?

Reddit and parent groups repeat the same two nightmares

On Reddit and Facebook parent groups, the trick-or-treat complaints every year are the same: a child gets separated from the group in an unfamiliar neighborhood, parents miscalculate how long one block takes and the kids melt down by 7 pm, and allergy-conscious parents have to inspect every wrapper on the curb. A route with a known finish time, a group rule and an etiquette list turns chaos into a pleasant two-hour outing. This planner exists so you know exactly when dinner, candy inspection and bedtime happen.

Is the planner free?
Yes. The time calculator, etiquette checklist and saved plan are all free and run in your browser.
Where is my route saved?
Only in this browser via localStorage. Nothing is uploaded, and it stays available when you come back on October 31.
Does this replace a real safety checklist?
No. Pair it with the safety checklist: reflective gear, a torch, allergy-aware candy checks and an agreed meeting point.
